Bagua is one of the three major internal Chinese martial arts, the other two being Xingyiquan and Taijiquan. Bagua literally means "eight trigram palm," referring to the trigrams of the Yijing, one of the canons of Taoism. In some styles of Baguazhang these diagrams can refer to eight animals, upon which movements in those fighting systems are based. Bagua is believed to have been composed in the 19th century by Dong Haichuan in accordance with Taoist theories. The movements cover eight directions as marked out in the Eight Diagrams in the Book of Changes, a classic work on divination. Bagua Zhang or Eight-Diagram Palm features dexterity and agility. When moving around it is like walking in a muddy place, with foot steps changing all the time like running water. Palm tracks and body movements follow one after another. The roving around looks like endless circles which overlap one another. The body turns around from the waist during walking, roving, turning, rising and falling. Palm tricks change with the movements of the body. When the upper body protrudes, the lower part of the body squats back to keep balance. When the arms are sent out, the feet are drawn back. The performer is required to "move like a swimming dragon, stare like a watchful monkey, sit like a crouching tiger and turn like a hovering eagle.
