Qi Family Tongbeiquan (also called "Old Qi Branch") is probably the oldest of all three branches of the style. Tongbei is a rare style of Chinese martial art from mainland China. There's very little of it around outside China, which is usually a good sign, as rare styles haven't had the chance to be watered down or commericalised for consumption by the masses. There are various different styles of Tongbei Quan. One particular style is Baiyuan Tongbei, which means'White Ape Tongbei', which uses the character of the long armed Chinese ape (which belongs to the Gibbon family) in much the same way that XingYi uses animal Xings (litterally 'shapes', or characters) to express a fighting method. Modern history of tongbeiquan usually starts from Qi Xian, habitant of Zhejiang province. In the beginning of XIX century he studied from daoist Lu Yunqing. His son Qi Taichang moved to Beijing, reformed the teaching of his father and created a new version of the style. past there existed "laoqipai" ("version of old Qi") and "Shaoqipai" ("version of young Qi"). In Tongbei Quan; it is the "mind" or "feeling" of the white ape that is emphasized, rather than imitation of the external physical movements. This is called "study the internal feelings, not the external movements.
